Oops, I Did It Again

It was the championship game in the Women's Front Range Face Off this past weekend. My Ice Monkey team didn't win much this past winter season, so this tournament was a chance to shake off our losing record and have a go at winning something. The previous weekend, we lost the championship game in a different tournament, landing us in second place. So this time, Monkeys wanted to prevail. We really, really, really wanted to win the championship, or at least I did.

There was a play at the net, with a shot from my teammate and a rebound spurted out. I crashed the net to try and bang it home, when the puck popped out again, this time on the opposite side. I was thinking "dive for it" as I twisted in the opposite direction and stretched out my stick to hopefully tap in the puck through the small opening, where the goalie didn't have her pad, but that didn't happen. Instead, I heard bones breaking and had the horrific realization that they were my own. I'm not sure if it was because my skate was caught up on something or someone because there was a lot of pushing and shoving going on, but it didn't matter. It was over in an instant and I knew I was done. I knew it was broken. My teammates helped me off the ice and my coach helped me get out of my gear in the locker room and SV came and got me and took me to the E.R.

I broke both the tibia and fibula, with the tib being a lot worse - it's a spiral fracture you can see close to the ankle in the x-ray, and then the fib fracture is up higher, below the knee. This is the same leg as my knee injury and you can see the pin from that surgery. I was wearing my knee brace per the doctor's orders and the knee held up, so that's the good news. With my foot strapped in so tight in my skate, and the brace on my knee, the only giving point for the torque action was exactly where it broke.

My over zealousness to win might have been my downfall, or maybe I need to drink more milk, but at least I'm not out for months like my knee. The doc thinks that my bones will heal fine in about 6-8 weeks, so after what I went through with my knee, that seems like child's play. I expect not to wallow near as bad as the first time. Readers, hold me to it.

As for the game, it went into overtime after I left the ice and unfortunately, the Monkeys lost. Damn-it.

You heard your own bones breaking? Oh, I'm woozy just thinking about it.

Yeah, that description is hard to read for girls who aren't as tough as you. I'm soooooo sorry! You've got a great attitude, though. Best wishes for a speedy recovery.

I had a very similar injury myself a few years back (not a spiral fracture, but a tib fib fracture that took 11 months to heal, long story, but fear not, I guess my break was in what's called a low blood area, so that's why healing took so long), and while it's awful to have happened to you, I am certain you will be back on your feat in no time. Did you get a rod and pins? I have a rod and 5 pins......fun! Make sure to get pleny o' percosets from your doctor.....they go great with beer!

seriously though, get well soon!

Thanks all. Devilham, 11 months sounds awful, ugh. I avoided surgery so far this time as long as my xray later this week shows mending in the proper way. The pin is from my knee surgery which I just recovered from, so that's a downer, but a few weeks will be so much better than that whole deal so trying to remain positive... Which with percocets and beer is attainable. ;)

Oh man...

Here's the student nurse in me: at least it wasn't displaced. It'll make healing easier. I'm sure the doctor told you and SV-- if you start getting woozy, confused, etc. get right to the ER. With a long bone injury, the risk of a fat embolism is higher. When you heal, talk to your physician about a bone density test.

Now the friend statement. Get better, and keep playing and exercising. It'll keep you young.

Oh, for Christ sake. How could it be? Oh, yeah. I know a woman who was bitten by a rattle snake TWICE in nine months! Sheesh. (Serously, nine months ago in Prescot hiking... last week dong some gardening... wtf)
Hang in there GKL!

What Johnny said... and oh darn it. I;m so sorry it had to happen to you. Rest and heal, ben there and done that with a nasty fracture.

Take care of yourself, you need to be in shape to wear those great shoes for Gods sake!

That sucks that you're out of it, but never once think it was because you were playing hard. If you stop playing the way you normally do and think you might get hurt then you're done as a player. Heal up and get back into the fray and play your ass off! :-D

Oh, GKL!! I'm so sorry to hear about this. I hope you are recovering well.

So sorry about the leg dear. I hope they gave you good painkillers. They gave me percocet and it helps to take the edge off but for the life of me I can't understand how someone could get addicted to them. They taste like shoe polish. They leave me super dopey. They make me constipated and they don't kill that much pain.

I hope your stock of tequilla holds out and know that I'm thinking about you every time I stand up and grab my crutches.
