Consider This The Before Shot

My leg didn't heal correctly - this photo is taken in a mirror so the crooked leg is on the left and is actually my left leg. The doctor says I can live with this slight rotation, but it will never correct itself on its own, or I can have surgery where they will re-break the bone and set it with a rod and pins. It didn't seem like much of a choice for an athlete.

I'll be joining the How Many Jokes Can We Make? party next Tuesday.

The most frustrating thing is not having this done from the start because I'd be back to playing hockey by now. My knee doc was on vacation when it happened and the other doc I got didn't even mention surgery until my medically-inclined boyfriend asked him about it. He urged not to have surgery unless needed and since the bones were in alignment, there was no reason to think I'd end up crooked. But after my doc got back in town, I started seeing him and we followed the now determined path of the first doc and not until after three months go by does he mention that he would have pushed me towards surgery right out of the gate. But no use crying over cracked ice.

And if you're sick of hearing about my leg, trust me, I'm sick of hearing about my leg too. I've been injured most of the past year. When will this ever end?

I hoe it heals better and stronger than before.

(insert lame 6 million dollar man na-na-na-na sound effect)

It will be worth it for all of us out here if we get a Doc-Style ass scan though...

I predict it will end when you stop injuring it. And to stop injuring it, stop playing hockey.

For the record, I injured my leg last year playing volleyball not hockey, so are you suggesting that I stop playing that too Dr. Monkey?! Or all sports in general? I might as well just stop breathing while I'm at it. ;)

So many doctors have so many different opionions and ways of treating the same problem, it's frustrating, isn't it? Then there's that whole "professional courtesy" thing, where they refuse to give honest opinions of their peers. My dad's general MD was going to send him back to an eye surgeon who botched his first eye surgery, until my dad specifically requested someone different. It was only then that the general MD told my dad how he didn't really like to refer people to the first guy anyway.

What a crappy development, GKL. I hope you're back to normal soon.

Wow, that sucks. My inclination is to avoid surgery if possible.

I know the feeling; Kim was laid off of two different jobs in the last year-- she's working now, thank god. We're tired of worrying about and talking about money. When I finish nursing school...

That sucks the big one! Hopefully they will get you fixed right this time and you won't ever have to worry about anything like this again.

Ugh, GKL! thing 2's arm has is crooked in the break spot. Her ortho felt avoiding surgery and pins was important - said her muscle would mask the crooked spot - and it mostly does. He said because she is so young the bone will form a ball around the break and the slight bend would not impact performance... Then again, he said if she is inclined to break the arm again-- that will be where it will break.

Take care and good luck!
